The VELscope laser procedure allows for the diagnosis and screening of precancerous oral matter. Oropharyngeal, also known as oral cancer, is triggered by uncontrollable cell growth that invades and causes damage to the surrounding tissue. Our dental clinic in Bulgaria often finds this in the lining of patients’ cheeks, the roof of the mouth, gums, lips, and tongue.
The majority of oral precancerous and cancerous conditions are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus, which also causes cancer of the uterine cervix. If left untreated, HPV can encourage the development of various strands of cancer. The risk group includes anyone who is part of the sexually active population. Early diagnosis can save lives.
Oral cancer symptoms can also be signs of other less serious conditions, but it’s always best to consult an expert if you are encountering any changes in your oral health.
How does the VELscope work?
VELscope technology is revolutionizing oral mucosal exams and goes well beyond the limits of conventional oral checkups. It allows our dentist in Sofia to observe the oral cavity in amazing depth, making it easier to identify potentially hazardous areas that would not be detectable in an ordinary dental visit.
The examination takes approximately two minutes, does not inflict pain or discomfort onto the patient, and is completely safe. During the process, a bright blue light will emit from the VELscope machine illuminating the differences between healthy tissue and traumatized and diseased tissue. If we find questionable areas, such as traces of biting or an injury that often results from wearing braces, the patient will remain under observation until the next checkup.
If the condition persists, our dentist in Sofia will take a biopsy. If the biopsy results indicate the formation of precancerous or nacreous material, we will discuss all of your treatment options with you.
Fortunately, the early diagnosis of oral cancer can lead to extremely positive results. It is a very important to undergo this test as a preventive measure at least once a year, or as often as every six months, especially if you smoke.
Dental sealants, also called pit and fissure sealants, are constructed of professionally-applied material that is positioned onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth in order to prevent cavities.
Sealants provide a physical barrier so that cavity-causing bacteria cannot invade the pits and fissures of the teeth. They can last up to 10 years, require minimal maintenance that can be performed at your regular checkups, and are recommended by professional health associations and public health agencies.
How Are Dental Sealants Applied?
Our dental clinics abroad apply sealants in an easy three-step process, rendering drilling and tooth removal unnecessary. Our Sofia dental specialist will first clean the patient’s tooth with a special toothpaste. Second, he or she will rub a special cleansing liquid on the tooth with a cotton ball and then rinse it off. Lastly, the sealant is painted on the root, and takes approximately a minute to dry and form a protective shield.
Who Needs Sealants?
Everyone, but especially kids to help prevent cavities from an early age. In child development, permanent molars arrive around the age of 6. Placing sealants on these teeth shortly after they come out helps kids avoid developing cavities in areas where food and bacteria collect. If proper dental care is practiced and sealants are applied routinely to susceptible tooth surfaces in conjunction with the appropriate use of fluoride, most tooth decay in children can be prevented.
How Do You Place Sealants?
1. Use a diagnostic laser to check for possible cavities.
2. Dentist will determine if ozone therapy should be applied to the tooth.
3. Application of liquid sealant to the tooth. After a few minutes, a thin, protective coat forms over the tooth.
Do the Child’s Teeth Feel Differently?
Like anything new placed in the mouth, sealants can be felt with your tongue. The child may detect a slight change, but sealants are all constructed of very thin material, and only cover the hollow of the tooth.
How Durable Are Sealants?
Dental sealants can last up to 10 years, but you should have checkups every six to eight months in order to prevent and repair chips or cracks.
Ozone therapy is used to disinfect cavity-filled teeth prior to filling them, and is also leveraged during root canals. Dental ozone therapy is a 100 percent pain-free oral treatment option.
